Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites

While many countries are working to defeat illegal online pharmacies that sell fake prescription medication, it can be very difficult to truly control these businesses, especially those that are based in one country but sell to another. However, the pharmacy industry itself is working to regulate this problem. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), a U.S. pharmacy board, created the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) plan in 1999. This plan helps customers learn about online pharmacies and their credentials before they purchase anything from them.

One of the downsides to VIPPS is, of course, the fact that it is a voluntary program. This means that online pharmacies do not have to have a VIPPS certification to operate. Those that do, however, have agreed to the following guidelines. They must maintain all licenses required to operate a standard pharmacy. They must allow information regarding their operations and their pharmacy to be posted on the VIPPS web site, and they have to provide updated information on a regular basis. They have to allow a team from the NABP to inspect their place of business and their operations, and finally, they have to link to the VIPPS web site and display a specific VIPPS graphic on their site.

When shopping online, anyone who sees the VIPPS graphic on an online pharmacy site knows that the pharmacy has been sanctioned by the NABP and sells only legal drugs. This is especially helpful to seniors, who are often the target of marketing scams. Many older internet users also don’t know of the many online ploys to get their credit card numbers, so letting them know of the graphic can help them be sure they only shop at legitimate online pharmacies.

In addition to VIPPS, there are two other campaigns working to make certain online pharmacies are legit in the United States. One is a voluntary list of guidelines the American Medical Association has published that are aimed at internet prescriptions. These guidelines list certain standards that doctors should follow when writing prescriptions online. They include examining the patient to be certain what medical condition they have; discussing the prescription with the patient, including side effects; and finally, performing a follow up exam to be certain that the patient is not reacting to the medication in some unforeseen negative way.

The third prong in the attack on illegal online pharmacies is being handled by the Food and Drug Administration. They’re working to education customers about both the benefits and the risks of using online pharmacies. They have launched a campaign using the internet, print brochures, and even radio stations to pass on important information about buying prescription drugs online.

All three of these programs will help cut down on online pharmacies in the United States that sell fake prescription drugs, but they won’t completely stop the practice. It’s all but impossible to police the internet, and because of that, consumers have to be aware of what they’re buying and who they’re buying it from.

Online Pharmacy Regulations

Many people are starting to turn to the internet for their prescription drugs, especially to online pharmacies that do not require you to have a written prescription from your doctor. However, there is always the concern that online pharmacies are not legitimate businesses. This is why many people still visit actual drug stores. In fact, records show that over three billion prescriptions are filled annually at actual pharmacies, while the sales of prescription medication online were still somewhat small.

There are many advantages to purchasing prescription drugs online, including the privacy of purchasing drugs without others knowing what you are purchasing, a greater availability of some drugs (especially for those who do not live near a major city), and the easy of shopping without ever leaving your home. You may also be able to find more information about products online than in a traditional pharmacy.

According to one survey, customers can actually save almost 30 percent by buying drugs online. This can translate to a considerable savings if the drugs are expensive. However, many online pharmacies do not have any sort of regulations or other laws surrounding the sales of their drugs. This means they can provide any prescription drug to anyone without a written prescription. They can also provide drugs that may not exactly do what they claim to.

In the United States, the FDA has found dozens of different online pharmacies may not be completely legal. Many of these pharmacies sell drugs like Viagra, weight loss drugs, and baldness drugs like Propecia. Online pharmacies based in other countries may also sell prescription drugs that may be much different from the approved version. This means these drugs may not actually cure anything.

When it comes to overseeing sales online, there are many different issues. State or government regulation boards may not be able to affect online pharmacies, especially those in other countries. The postal service and customs service of a country can help cut down on the shipping of illegal drugs. In the United States, the FDA does not allow pharmacies to sell prescription drugs to people who do not have a prescription. However, online pharmacies that operate in other countries can often bypass the FDA and sell prescription drugs anyway. It can be nearly impossible to regulate how these online pharmacies operate and what drugs they sell. Even if they manage to shut down an online pharmacy, there’s nothing to stop that company from changing their name and starting a new website.

The regulation of online health products is something many countries are working towards. Many are working to shut down illegal online pharmacies, while others are trying to legalize these pharmacies by getting them to agree to certain regulations and requirements. Again, however, it can be difficult to find and shut down these companies, and those who do not want to agree to regulations will find some way around them. To that end, it’s very important for customers to realize that not all online pharmacies are legitimate.
