Dealing with Migraines

Migraines are simply no fun, as anyone who has suffered from them will tell you. Migraines are more than just horrible headaches like some people think—they can leave a person completely debilitated. While symptoms do vary from person to person, here are the common five phases of a migraine:

1. Prodrome – you notice odd tastes or smells, and you have sudden mood changes. You may also feel tired or have muscle tension.
2. Visual/auditory cues – before the pain sets in, you may see spots, start to lose vision, or (rarely) hear odd noises or ringing.
3. Headache – in phase three, the pain hits. Most people experience headache on one side of their head, although some experience pain on both sides. This throbbing headache may also be accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light.
4. Headache ends – the pain eventually goes away if you sleep, even if you don’t take any medication.
5. Postdrome – after waking up, even though the headache is gone, most migraine sufferers have a lingering weakness, fatigue, and even lack of appetite.

For those who deal with migraines, there are several things that can help:
• Taking a nap in a cool, dark room with little noise
• Supporting the head and neck with firm pillows
• Using a cold compress on the forehead or back of the neck
• Taking migraine medication
• Studying what triggers migraines and avoiding that trigger
• Drinking a cup of coffee or other caffeinated drink
• Exercising regularly can help reduce migraines

Various over the counter and prescription drugs can also help relieve migraine pain. Taking anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen (Aleve) and ketoprofen (Orudis) can help relieve pain, but they should not be taken by those with a history of stomach bleeding or ulcers. They should also not be taken for a long period of time.

Tylenol or other medication containing acetaminophen is also helpful and can be taken in conjunction with any of the above anti-inflammatory medication. However, it should be noted that these over the counter medications may not work for everyone, and that doctors do not yet have a 100% effective treatment for migraines.

There are some prescription medications aimed at preventive migraines. People take these drugs during the prodrome stage or right when they feel the headache coming on. Some of these drugs are actually self-injected, while others are taken orally. Most are very quick acting. They include triptans (which treat the headache only, not other pains), cafergot, migranal nasal sprays, and midrin. Some nausea medications, including comprazine and phenergan, have also been known to have preventative properties.

In the event that these drugs don’t work, some painkillers can help. However, these drugs, which include fiorinal and Tylenol with codeine, can be addictive and should only be used as an absolute last resort.

Dealing with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

If you feel sleepy, tired, and simply out of energy much of the time, you may suffer from what is called chronic fatigue syndrome. However, this diagnosis isn’t always easy one for a doctor to make. We know very little about chronic fatigue syndrome, and there is no definitive treatment for it. However, many people have been diagnosed with this issue—in fact around 20 percent of all patients who go to their doctor with reports of feeling unenergetic have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. By what is this issue, and how can be deal with it?

If you’ve suffered from constant signs of fatigue for more than six months and don’t seem to gain energy from sleeping, you may have chronic fatigue syndrome. However, it isn’t something that occurs suddenly. In fact, those who suffer from this syndrome say they gradually became more and more fatigued over a period of time. Often, the fatigue is part of another illness, infection, or disorder. Those with chronic fatigue syndrome also often feel worse after any sort of mental or physical activity.

For many, chronic fatigue syndrome manifests itself in a way similar to the flu. The person finds him or herself completely drained for energy for weeks. The weeks turn into months, and during this time, they may find themselves suffering from other illnesses. Oddly, women are more often diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (two to four times as many women have been diagnosed as men). However, it is uncertain as to whether this means more women are chronically fatigues or if more women seek help from their doctor for the syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms start with, of course, extreme fatigue that does not go away after resting and only gets worse when being active. Further signs can include having difficulty concentrating, being confused, and becoming forgetful. Weakness, headaches, and even join and muscle pain can occur in extreme cases. For some people, they find themselves so weak that they actually cannot perform some daily tasks. While these symptoms are similar to those caused by the flu, they last much longer—sometimes even years.

The problem with dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome is that there’s no real test for it, nor is there any real treatment plan. The best health care professionals can do is treat as many symptoms as possible. However, it can be difficult to know what will work for one person and what won’t. Sleep aids, for example, may result in more sleep for a person but not actual rest, leaving them just as fatigued as before.

If you believe you’re suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, you should visit your doctor immediately. While it may not seem like much at first, chronic fatigue syndrome can become a very serious disorder.

Why Vitamin B12 Is Important

There are many different important vitamins out there, and we’re told we need a certain percentage of all of them to truly be healthy. But does anyone really understand what these vitamins do? We may know about a few of them, but most we simply take because we’re told to. This is often the case with Vitamin B12, one of the many B vitamins that are on the list of daily recommended vitamins.

Vitamin B12, sometimes referred to as Cobalamin, has two main functions: it produces DNA and RNA. Both of these acids contain our genetic information and are required in the process of creating new cells. Of course, there’s a lot more to Vitamin B12 than just these two important functions. However, the creation of new cells is vital to our bodies and for this reason alone, B12 is important.

Vitamin B12 is also responsible for helping our bodies produce a variety of important hormones, including melatonin, serotonin, and myonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps us fall asleep and helps us have good, healthy, restorative sleep cycles. Serotonin affects our moods, and when if a person has an imbalance or lack of serotonin, he or she may experience depression or mood swings. Finally, myonin helps keep our nerves healthy and protected from damage.

The good news is that most of us get all of the Vitamin B12 we need, and B12 deficiency is fairly rare. However, some people do lack the necessary substance in the intestines that helps the body absorb Vitamin B12. Lack of this substance, known as intrinsic factor, is often associated with other stomach and digestive issues. If you suffer from a number of stomach problems and notice that you aren’t sleeping well or are depressed a lot, you may not be absorbing enough Vitamin B12. You may want to talk to you doctor about testing your intestines for intrinsic factor. The earlier you discover this health issue, the better.

If it turns out you do have a Vitamin B12 deficiency, it may lead to what is called pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia results in your red blood cell count dropping and the cells themselves becoming larger. This can make it hard for you to walk, throw off your balance, make you feel weak, and even cause permanent damage to your nerves. If you catch it early enough, the problem can be corrected and most of the symptoms reversed. However, if it goes on long enough, the damage to your nerves can lead to many other problems.

Muscle Relaxants and Side Effects

Muscle relaxants are generally taken to help alleviate the pain caused by muscle spasms, sprains, strains, and other types of muscle injuries that can cause stiffness, pain, and other discomfort. These drugs work by forcing muscles to relax, but they don’t actually heal anything—they only provide pain relief. Dealing with Holiday Depression

Have you ever wondered why you feel down around the holidays? Aren’t they supposed to be happy times? - Go exercise. During the colder holidays, many people stop doing outdoor activities because of the weather. Find alternatives to these activities—join a gym, learn indoor exercises, or bundle up and go for a run.
