Dealing with Migraines

Migraines are simply no fun, as anyone who has suffered from them will tell you. Migraines are more than just horrible headaches like some people think—they can leave a person completely debilitated. While symptoms do vary from person to person, here are the common five phases of a migraine:

1. Prodrome – you notice odd tastes or smells, and you have sudden mood changes. You may also feel tired or have muscle tension.
2. Visual/auditory cues – before the pain sets in, you may see spots, start to lose vision, or (rarely) hear odd noises or ringing.
3. Headache – in phase three, the pain hits. Most people experience headache on one side of their head, although some experience pain on both sides. This throbbing headache may also be accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound and light.
4. Headache ends – the pain eventually goes away if you sleep, even if you don’t take any medication.
5. Postdrome – after waking up, even though the headache is gone, most migraine sufferers have a lingering weakness, fatigue, and even lack of appetite.

For those who deal with migraines, there are several things that can help:
• Taking a nap in a cool, dark room with little noise
• Supporting the head and neck with firm pillows
• Using a cold compress on the forehead or back of the neck
• Taking migraine medication
• Studying what triggers migraines and avoiding that trigger
• Drinking a cup of coffee or other caffeinated drink
• Exercising regularly can help reduce migraines

Various over the counter and prescription drugs can also help relieve migraine pain. Taking anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen (Aleve) and ketoprofen (Orudis) can help relieve pain, but they should not be taken by those with a history of stomach bleeding or ulcers. They should also not be taken for a long period of time.

Tylenol or other medication containing acetaminophen is also helpful and can be taken in conjunction with any of the above anti-inflammatory medication. However, it should be noted that these over the counter medications may not work for everyone, and that doctors do not yet have a 100% effective treatment for migraines.

There are some prescription medications aimed at preventive migraines. People take these drugs during the prodrome stage or right when they feel the headache coming on. Some of these drugs are actually self-injected, while others are taken orally. Most are very quick acting. They include triptans (which treat the headache only, not other pains), cafergot, migranal nasal sprays, and midrin. Some nausea medications, including comprazine and phenergan, have also been known to have preventative properties.

In the event that these drugs don’t work, some painkillers can help. However, these drugs, which include fiorinal and Tylenol with codeine, can be addictive and should only be used as an absolute last resort.

Sinus Infections

There are several different types of infections that nearly all people have to deal with at least once in their lives, and sinus infections are one of these. While a mild sinus infection may seem like just a case of the common cold or even a weak version of the flu, it should not be treated as such. Sinusitis is more than just a cold. There are actually two types of sinusitis, or sinus infections: acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis. The treatment for each is a little different.

Chronic sinusitis is a recurring sinus infection that can be serious if not dealt with. This type of pain may seem to have no trigger. Seeing a doctor is often the only way to fully understand your chronic sinusitis, and it often takes prescription medication to control.

Acute sinusitis is the type of sinus infection that most people suffer from. It usually begins in the facial sinus area near the cheekbones and in the nasal cavities. These sinuses have a number of different names. Those located in the cheekbones are known as the Maxillary sinuses, while the nasal sinuses are called the Ethmoid sinuses. While the Maxillary and Ethmoid sinuses are the most common areas of sinusitis, the infection can also develop in the frontal sinus area.

The first time you experience acute sinusitis, the infection generally only lasts for a short time before it clears up. The infection takes a few days to go from a slight pain to full acute sinusitis. Once this happens, the infection lasts for around a week or so. You can take some over the counter medication during this time to deal with the pain and stop it from getting worse. However, this isn’t necessary since the infection will clear up on its own after a week or so. You can also use home remedies to dull the pain.

When it comes to home treatments, drinking many fluids (especially water) can help control the production of mucus, as can using a humidifier or taking a hot, steamy shower. Placing a warm wash cloth over your face a few times a day can also help with the stuffy, blocked feeling in your sinuses.

You can also take a number of over the counter medications, including decongestants, pain killers, specific sinus infection medication, and more. In the worst cases, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics for your sinus infection. The most important thing, however, is to keep healthy during the week or so that you’re dealing with acute sinusitis. While you may not feel like eating large meals, try to keep your strength up. Remember to drink a lot of fluids and rest during the week to help your body fight off the infection.

Dealing with Depression and Suicide

Often, people who are suffering from depression are also suffering from something else: thoughts of suicide. During times of depression, especially deep depression, people no longer think rationally or clearly, even though they believe they are. This can lead to them seeing their life and their world as being the absolute worst it can ever be. This then leads to thoughts of killing themselves to end this horrible existence. People who suffer from depression and emotional issues need to get help before they start thinking of suicide.

As you may know, depression can affect anyone—teens, middle-aged professionals, retired people…depression doesn’t only affect specific people. There are many different studies and tests exploring depression and how it connects to suicide. Many of these studies are focused on college students because many students find themselves under a lot of stress. This stress can lead to depression, especially if the student is having difficulties in class. Failing students, especially during final exams, may start thinking of harming or even killing themselves.

If you suspect you may be suffering from severe depression and are having thoughts of suicide, or if you believe a close friend or family member is contemplating suicide, here are some signs to watch out for:

The person starts to give away his or her belongings, especially favorite items or items with significance. Often they make a presentation of the item or put stress on how much they want the person to have this item.

The person begins to have a strange fascination with death and with suicide. They may talk about it often, even to the point of making everyone around them uncomfortable. They might read books on the subject or watch macabre television shows or movies that feature suicides.

The person becomes a heavy drinker or dives into drug use. He or she may suddenly start trying all sorts of different drinks and drugs just to have the experience before ending their life.

The person starts talking about death and being dead in a very positive light. They may actually voice a wish for being dead. They will talk about how peaceful and clam the afterlife must be and how great it would be to be reunited with passed on loved ones.

The person may also have sudden mood swings. They may go from being happy to being very sad very quickly.

The person may also start widely spending money. They may take a sudden, expensive vacation, buy people expensive gifts, or even stop paying their bills because, as they may say, “there’s no point to it.”
Remember, depression and suicidal thoughts should be taken quite seriously. Many people who have suicidal thoughts do not go through with them, but a good number do end up killing themselves or making an attempt. Helping someone think positively and seek the help they need is absolutely a must.

Dealing with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

If you feel sleepy, tired, and simply out of energy much of the time, you may suffer from what is called chronic fatigue syndrome. However, this diagnosis isn’t always easy one for a doctor to make. We know very little about chronic fatigue syndrome, and there is no definitive treatment for it. However, many people have been diagnosed with this issue—in fact around 20 percent of all patients who go to their doctor with reports of feeling unenergetic have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. By what is this issue, and how can be deal with it?

If you’ve suffered from constant signs of fatigue for more than six months and don’t seem to gain energy from sleeping, you may have chronic fatigue syndrome. However, it isn’t something that occurs suddenly. In fact, those who suffer from this syndrome say they gradually became more and more fatigued over a period of time. Often, the fatigue is part of another illness, infection, or disorder. Those with chronic fatigue syndrome also often feel worse after any sort of mental or physical activity.

For many, chronic fatigue syndrome manifests itself in a way similar to the flu. The person finds him or herself completely drained for energy for weeks. The weeks turn into months, and during this time, they may find themselves suffering from other illnesses. Oddly, women are more often diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (two to four times as many women have been diagnosed as men). However, it is uncertain as to whether this means more women are chronically fatigues or if more women seek help from their doctor for the syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms start with, of course, extreme fatigue that does not go away after resting and only gets worse when being active. Further signs can include having difficulty concentrating, being confused, and becoming forgetful. Weakness, headaches, and even join and muscle pain can occur in extreme cases. For some people, they find themselves so weak that they actually cannot perform some daily tasks. While these symptoms are similar to those caused by the flu, they last much longer—sometimes even years.

The problem with dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome is that there’s no real test for it, nor is there any real treatment plan. The best health care professionals can do is treat as many symptoms as possible. However, it can be difficult to know what will work for one person and what won’t. Sleep aids, for example, may result in more sleep for a person but not actual rest, leaving them just as fatigued as before.

If you believe you’re suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, you should visit your doctor immediately. While it may not seem like much at first, chronic fatigue syndrome can become a very serious disorder.

Quick Back Pain Relief Tips

If you’ve dealt with severe, nearly debilitating back pain, you know it’s more than just an ache—when your back seizes up and that stabbing, shooting pain seems to consume your body, it can feel like the end of the world. Acute back pain seems to occur for no reason, and this unexpected sharp pain can come at any time. It doesn’t matter if you’re lying in bed, cooking dinner, or in the middle of a work presentation for 50 people. Acute back pain differs from chronic back pain, which is almost always constant or occurs regularly.

Acute back pain is usually caused by an injury of some sort, but sometimes, a chronic condition, especially an untreated condition, can also be to blame. The best thing to do, of course, is go to your doctor and have your back examined so that the cause of the pain can be handled. If you have acute back pain and can’t get to the doctor right away, though, here are some things you can do for quick relief. Many of these tips will also help with chronic back pain as well.

The most important thing you can do for your back pain is to rest your back. You certainly don’t want to put any extra stress on it or you could risk making your back injury (and, thus, your back pain) much worse. Do your best to avoid any heavy lifting, awkward stretching, or bending as possible. You want to keep your back and spine as straight as you can. This neutral position will ensure that your back isn’t being over-extended and can help it heal.

One very important and easy way of helping your back heal is to have good posture. Slouching puts your back in an unnatural position and can put odd stresses and pressure on it. If you have an ergonomic chair, sitting in it will help you keep your posture. If you don’t, using a lumbar role or other support can help. Try to avoid those comfortable, over-stuffed chairs and sofas as they don’t really offer much in the way of back support and can make things worse.

Riding in or driving a car can aggravate your back pain, but there are a couple of things that can help. First, take that lumbar role with you when you leave and use it in the car. This will help keep your back in its neutral position. If you’re driving, move the seat back so that you have to keep your arms up and straight while holding the wheel. This actually helps keep your body in an upright position, which relieves some of the stress on your spine and back.

Remember that these tips will only provide short-term relief for your acute or chronic back pain. The only real want to permanently get rid of the pain is to let your back heal, and for that, you may need to see a doctor.

Why Vitamin B12 Is Important

There are many different important vitamins out there, and we’re told we need a certain percentage of all of them to truly be healthy. But does anyone really understand what these vitamins do? We may know about a few of them, but most we simply take because we’re told to. This is often the case with Vitamin B12, one of the many B vitamins that are on the list of daily recommended vitamins.

Vitamin B12, sometimes referred to as Cobalamin, has two main functions: it produces DNA and RNA. Both of these acids contain our genetic information and are required in the process of creating new cells. Of course, there’s a lot more to Vitamin B12 than just these two important functions. However, the creation of new cells is vital to our bodies and for this reason alone, B12 is important.

Vitamin B12 is also responsible for helping our bodies produce a variety of important hormones, including melatonin, serotonin, and myonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps us fall asleep and helps us have good, healthy, restorative sleep cycles. Serotonin affects our moods, and when if a person has an imbalance or lack of serotonin, he or she may experience depression or mood swings. Finally, myonin helps keep our nerves healthy and protected from damage.

The good news is that most of us get all of the Vitamin B12 we need, and B12 deficiency is fairly rare. However, some people do lack the necessary substance in the intestines that helps the body absorb Vitamin B12. Lack of this substance, known as intrinsic factor, is often associated with other stomach and digestive issues. If you suffer from a number of stomach problems and notice that you aren’t sleeping well or are depressed a lot, you may not be absorbing enough Vitamin B12. You may want to talk to you doctor about testing your intestines for intrinsic factor. The earlier you discover this health issue, the better.

If it turns out you do have a Vitamin B12 deficiency, it may lead to what is called pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia results in your red blood cell count dropping and the cells themselves becoming larger. This can make it hard for you to walk, throw off your balance, make you feel weak, and even cause permanent damage to your nerves. If you catch it early enough, the problem can be corrected and most of the symptoms reversed. However, if it goes on long enough, the damage to your nerves can lead to many other problems.

Obviously, then, you want to get the recommended amount of Vitamin B12 every day. Most people get B12 from animal products, which are the best source of the vitamin. Foods like liver, fish, cheese, milk, eggs, and other dairy products are high in Vitamin B12. This means that those of you who enjoy a vegetarian or, especially, a vegan lifestyle may need to take B12 supplements or a daily multivitamin that contains a high amount of B12 to get as much of the vitamin as you need.

Muscle Relaxants and Side Effects

Muscle relaxants are generally taken to help alleviate the pain caused by muscle spasms, sprains, strains, and other types of muscle injuries that can cause stiffness, pain, and other discomfort. These drugs work by forcing muscles to relax, but they don’t actually heal anything—they only provide pain relief. Many of the most powerful muscle relaxants are only available by prescription, although there are some over the counter muscle relaxants. Most are taken in tablet form, although some (the most powerful) are generally done in a drip or via injection.

However, while muscle relaxants are quite popular as a painkiller and as a way of making a patient more comfortable, there are some professionals who question the safeness of muscle relaxants. Their concerns are based on the fact that muscle relaxants have a number of side effects. These side effects vary from person to person, but they can include many of the following.

One major concern is the fact that muscle relaxants can impair a person’s mental and physical abilities. Patients who take these drugs may feel drowsy, confused, and dizzy. This can put them and others into dangerous situations if the patient is driving or operating heavy equipment. Patients may also experience blurred vision and become unsteady.

If muscle relaxants are combined with other drugs or with alcohol, the side effects may be much worse. For this reason, those who are taking other prescription medication need to speak with their doctor before they take any muscle relaxants. Some medication simply does not mix well with the active ingredients in muscle relaxants. Some other side effects that muscle relaxants have been known to cause include vomiting, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, cramps, diarrhea, trembling, heartburn, and an overall feeling of weakness. While some people have experienced severe drowsiness, muscle relaxants have also been known to cause insomnia and fitful sleep.

While taking muscle relaxants may be the only way to control the pain caused by spasms, it should be noted that there is really no way to prevent any of the side effects. The best one can hope for is to reduce the side effects by taking the medication as directed and not drinking alcohol or using other drugs. One should always take the exact dosage, not more, no matter how bad the pain is. In addition to following the dose, patients should also get plenty of rest and follow their doctor’s recommended exercise and therapy regimen. Muscle relaxants are, after all, not meant to be a long-term solution to pain, so the cause of the muscle spasms must be addressed.

Common Painkillers and Their Uses

There are many different types of pain you may experience in your life, and it seems like for every one, there are three different types of painkillers that are supposed to be the best. There are so many different medications out there that it can be really difficult to decide which one is best for your type of pain. Are over the counter painkillers the best, or should you ask a doctor for a prescription? The following list contains many of the most common painkillers and the type of pain they are designed to deal with.

Aspirin used to be the be-all, end-all cure for all types of pains, and while it isn’t as widely used as it once was, it is still good for nearly all types of aches. It has also been show to actually help lower your risk of having a stroke and of heart disease. Many people still take aspirin for pain and find that it works very well for many issues.

Ibuprofen is another very popular painkiller that is widely available over the counter. Ibuprofen works very well for muscle pains of all types, migraines, arthritis, general strains and sprains, and inflammation and pain caused by periods. Ibuprofen also works very well as a painkiller for toothaches.

Paracetamol is another over the counter painkiller that works well for headaches, toothaches, and sprains. It has also been shown to help relieve the symptoms of the common cold and of fever.

Codeine has become a popular painkiller lately, even though it is only available with a prescription. Codeine is used by doctors as a general painkiller, and it is often used in combination with other prescriptions and medications.

Morphine is another prescription drug that just about everyone has heard of. It is used to relieve pain caused by heart attacks, and it is also used for major back pain, kidney stones, and for those who may experience pain after surgery. Morphine, like many other prescription painkillers, can be very addictive.

Oxycodone is a much more powerful painkiller that is prescription-only. Generally, it is only prescribed to those who have just gone through surgery or are experiencing very severe back pains.

Those who play sports often may be prescribed piroxicam at some point. This painkiller is used to treat most sports pains, sprains, tennis elbow, and other pains. It is also prescribed for those with osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and juvenile arthritis.

These are just a few of the most common over the counter and prescription painkillers on the market. Remember that while any painkiller is going to help, if you use the correct painkiller for your symptoms, you may find that the pain is greatly reduced.

Three Types of Muscle Relaxants

There are a number of different muscle relaxants out there, although the term “muscle relaxant” is something of a misnomer. Actually, muscle relaxants are not classified as their own category of drugs, which makes it hard to determine exactly how many muscle relaxants there are. Muscle relaxants are generally any type of drug that provides an overall sedative for your body. They don’t actually directly affect the muscles. Instead, the affect is one the brain and cause your entire body to relax.

When a doctor prescribes a muscle relaxant, he or she is generally prescribing it for back pain, especially lower back pain that is caused by muscle spasms. Muscle relaxants are also usually only prescribed for short-term use and not as a permanent “cure” for back pain or any other type of pain.

Here are three common muscle relaxants that doctors often prescribe for patients suffering from back pain and other muscle pains:

Soma (Carisoprodol) is a short-term muscle relaxant that is often prescribed in 350mg doses every eight hours or so. While Soma is prescribed fairly regularly as a muscle relaxant, it can be very addictive, especially if it is taken while drinking or while under the influence of other mind-altering drugs.

Valium (Diazepam) is a widely known drug that is usually prescribed only for a period of a few weeks, if that long. Valium is usually taken every six hours, and the dosage is almost never more than ten milligrams. It helps relieve lower back pain caused by muscle spasms, but it may also be prescribed for any type of pain. There are several dangers when taking Valium. It is very habit-forming if taking long term and it greatly disrupts a person’s natural sleep cycle. In fact, some patients find it hard to get back to sleeping regularly after taking Valium. Valium is also a depressant, and it can caused increased symptoms of depression in those who are already diagnosed with being depressed.

Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine) is, unlike Soma and Valium, prescribed for longer periods of time. Unlike Valium, Flexeril is designed to act somewhat like an antidepressant, although it is not technically one. Generally, doctors will prescribe ten milligrams to be taken every six hours for back pain caused by muscle spasms. The same dosage may also be prescribed as a sleep aid. Flexeril can, however, impair physical and mental functions, so those taking the medication should not operate heavy machinery and may even need to refrain from driving.

Saving on Prescription Drugs

Buying prescription drugs, especially in today’s economy, can be a real hardship. Many people, in fact, are faced with the choice of paying their bills or buying their medication, and when it comes to a choice like that, nearly everyone chooses to stop taking their prescription drug. This, of course, can have a number of repercussions. To help people keep both their homes and their medication, here are some ways to save money on prescription drugs.

- Ask about a generic version. Many prescription brand name drugs are also available in a generic version, and these generic versions may be much, much less. If your doctor wants to prescribe medication to you, ask him or her if there’s a generic version you can take instead of assuming you have no choice.

- Alternatively, ask your pharmacist about a generic version or a cheaper drug when you take your prescription to the pharmacy. You may be able to get a generic version from your pharmacist.

- Simply let your doctor know that you cannot afford the prescription. Many people feel embarrassed to admit that they can’t afford their medication, but doctors understand this. If you discuss the cost of the medication with your doctor, he or she may be able to prescribe another drug that will work just as well but cost much less.

- Use an online pharmacy. Typically, even though you have to pay for shipping, online or mail order pharmacies are cheaper than conventional pharmacies. Just remember that you will have to wait a week or so for your medication.

- Ask for free samples, but be wary. While free samples can be a great thing, often the samples are for the most expensive drugs out there. This means that once you run out of samples, you’ll have to pay a lot to continue using the same medication.

- Likewise, don’t always insist on having medication you’ve seen on TV or read about in magazines. Commercials and magazine ads are often, like samples, for the most expensive drugs out there. These expensive brand names may not work any better than the cheaper, generic versions, but they will almost always cost much more.

- Look into a prescription assistance program. There are several different programs available for people who can’t afford their medication. Look into them.

- Shop around. You may be surprised at the difference in price for the same drug at different pharmacies. Just like any major purchase, feel free to call different pharmacies and ask for their price for your medication.

- Ask your doctor if you need to continue taking some medication. This is especially true if you’ve been to several doctors who have all prescribed you medication. Chances are these doctors haven’t communicated with each other about the prescriptions, so you may be taking medication you don’t need.

Dealing with Holiday Depression

Have you ever wondered why you feel down around the holidays? Aren’t they supposed to be happy times? Your holiday depression isn’t just your imagination—it’s a very real thing, and many people suffer from it. If you find yourself depressed around the holidays, here are some ways to help cheer you up.

- Acknowledge that your depression is real. If you’re recently lost someone close to you or are away from your family during the holidays, it’s normal to feel a little sadness. Forcing yourself to be happy and pushing away the feelings of grief you have will only repress the emotions.
- Don’t seek comfort in eating or drinking. Many people feel like they’re obligated to gorge themselves during the holidays, but if you’re feeling depressed, you may start comfort eating. Using food to dull your emotions only leads to weight gain, which causes more depression. Likewise, don’t drown your depression in alcohol, either.
- Look for support. If you’ve lost someone, talk to your family about it and share you emotions. If you’re far from home, turn to your friends, co-workers, or religious community. All can offer you support and friendship during the holidays.
- Likewise, you can always volunteer at a local soup kitchen. You’ll find plenty of people to talk to, and you’ll feel good for helping others.
- Make plans. Stress at the holidays can only add to your depression, so do your best to avoid it. Plan out your shopping, cooking, and travel so you have plenty of time to accomplish everything.
- Watch your budget. Again, stressing over money can lead to further depression, so know how much you can spend and don’t let yourself spend more. Look for more meaningful ways of expressing your affection if you have a small budget.
- Some people do experience seasonal affective disorder, a disorder caused by the shorter days. If you suspect this may be the cause of your depression, consult your doctor. You may need to purchase a special light to help fight off the depression.
- Go exercise. During the colder holidays, many people stop doing outdoor activities because of the weather. Find alternatives to these activities—join a gym, learn indoor exercises, or bundle up and go for a run.

Remember that during the hustle and bustle of the holidays to take some time out for yourself. You don’t have to always be on the go. This is why it’s important to plan. In amongst all the shopping, baking, and visiting, be sure you have a few moments each day to relax. Too many people get wrapped up in what’s expected of them during the holidays, and when they don’t accomplish it all, they become more depressed. Remember that holidays aren’t about giving but about being together, and don’t stress over it. Instead, focus on your family or community and enjoy giving what you can.

Depression and Weight Gain

In this day and age, it seems like the vast majority of people are constantly dieting and trying to lose weight. If they aren’t actively working on slimming down, they’re working on maintaining their ideal weight. Losing too much weight is, of course, a health risk, but the opposite is certainly true as well. Obesity seems to be more and more of a problem, especially with teens. There are many causes of weight gain. Some of it is hereditary. Some of it is simply eating wrong. However, there’s another cause of weight gain that many people fail to address: depression.

When we get depressed, we often turn to something comforting to temporarily make the depression go away. We want to be happy, but rather than dealing with the cause of the depression, we want a magic cure—something that makes us feel good right away. For some, this is becoming engrossed in a hobby or in their job until they shut out the rest of the world. For others, it’s food.

Comfort eating is the term most commonly used to refer to people eating as a way of feeling good. To some extent, we all do this. Who hasn’t stopped off for some ice cream or had a candy bar after a bad day at work? These little pick me ups generally aren’t a sign of depression, and most of the time, they’re harmless. They’re just little treats that we use to make ourselves feel a little better after a bad day. However, when it goes from an every now and then treat to an every day necessity, it has crossed the line.

It can be hard to see the signs of comfort eating right away. In fact, to some extent we even encourage comfort eating in those who are suddenly depressed, which is a danger. After someone has died, friends and family often bring over food for the gathering after the funeral. Usually, this is food that makes people feel good, and it’s this food that starts the eating. Other times, people will take a depressed friend out to dinner at our favorite restaurant as a way of trying to cheer them up. This starts the mental association of food and good times or at least time spent with friends and family.

Following the immediate “food therapy” that friends provide, people begin seeing every day as a horrible day, and they start falling back on their comfort foods to cheer them up. These are usually foods that aren’t good for them in large quantities, such as ice cream, chocolate, and greasy foods. During depression, diets are thrown out the window, and even healthy eating is set aside so we can eat food that makes us feel better about the world.

Battling comfort eating is not easy. If you find yourself gaining weight immediately following a depressing event, take a good look at your eating habits. Often, breaking out of eating comfort foods is the first step towards getting out of your depression.

Different Pain Killers for Different Symptoms

There are a lot of different types of pain, and with the advancements of medicine there are plenty of pain killers out there that will work for each. The key to understanding how to best treat the pain that you are experiencing is to know about the various pain killers on the market and how they will affect you. For example, one of the best things that you can do is to speak to your doctor about the pain and discuss the options with them for putting you on a stable and reliable pain killer that can assist you to negotiate any problems you may be experiencing.

Sometimes, if there is a problem that is the root cause of the pain, you will need a specific kind of pain killer that can deal with it. For example, you might need a pain killer that helps reduce inflammation if you have a problem with a bulging disk or a sprained knee. There is even a chance that if these problems are not addressed correctly that you could end up with even more serious complications. That’s why you should not try to compensate for the pain with over the counter pain killers unless you are completely sure that this is what would be recommended by your physician.

One of the main reasons that people use pain killers on a regular basis is because of arthritis pain. These kinds of prescription drugs are known as analgesic pain killers, and there are side effects and problems associated with them. The important thing to remember when you are dealing with this kind of pain is that there becomes a time when the potential side effects have to be weighed against the level of pain that the patient is experiencing. Many people start out with over the counter pain killers when treating arthritis, and as their symptoms expand then they move up to the higher levels of medications that will work to treat their symptoms. When you do this your doctor will work with you to make sure that you get on the best pain killer regimen for your symptoms and your pain.

One way people are working with their doctors to help decide what type of pain medication that they should take is by researching the different types of medications themselves before they go in to talk to the physician. While this can be a very beneficial exercise, and it can definitely help you to understand what kind of pain medication you will be taking, you need to remember that in the end your doctor will be better able to diagnose and treat your symptoms. Research is an important tool to helping you be an active participant in your treatment, but do not let it get too far. Oftentimes the use of pain killers can be manipulated and abused. So, you will want to make sure that you pay close attention to the dosage and regulation of the medication to prevent any problems.

Everyone gets depressed from time to time. There are many causes of depression. Some are beyond your control, such as the death of a loved one or a natural disaster destroying your home. Other causes, such as losing a job or causing a car crash may have been avoidable, and this leads to an even deeper depression. However, if you allow depression to take control of your life, you’ll end up spiraling down into despair so deep and so dark that you may not easily be able to get out of it. If you find yourself slipping deeper and deeper into depression, here are some coping techniques that may help you.

- Talk to someone. It may sound like a cliché, and it may be much easier said than done, but talking to someone else about your depression and the causes of it can be very helpful. This doesn’t mean you have to go out and see a therapist. Just talking to a close friend or relative can be enough. However, if the person you’re talking to isn’t a good listener or criticizes you to the point that you feel worse after talking to him/her, you may want to find someone else to chat with.

- Get out of the house. Too many depressed people stay shut up in their home all day. They don’t do anything very productive, either—most simply sit around watching TV, sleeping, or just wallowing in their depression. This doesn’t help. Even if you are sitting at home doing something productive, it’s still a good idea to get out every now and then. A change of scenery can help a lot, even if it’s just running to the grocery store or having a quick lunch with a friend.

- Don’t change your habits. Often, people who are depressed will stop exercising, working on their hobbies, and in general disrupt their entire routine. Do your best to not allow this to happen. While your depression may be caused by a life-changing event, you should not allow it to disrupt every aspect of your life in the long term (short term disruption is to be expected). Try to get back to your regular (or at least as regular as you can make it) routine within a few weeks at the most.

- Talk to a professional. If speaking to a friend or family member just isn’t helping, you may want to seek professional help. This doesn’t always have to be a long-term commitment—some people only need a few sessions to start climbing out of their depression. Others, though, may need years. Cost may not always be an issue—some employers offer a set number of free counseling sessions as part of their benefits package.

- Finally, consider medication. Your doctor or therapist may recommend you take an anti-depressant. This is nothing to be ashamed of. Some people find themselves depressed without any reason to be. The cause of this is often a chemical imbalance, and prescription drugs can correct it. However, don’t jump straight to medication as the only answer. Sometimes, other methods work just as well.

Dos and Don’ts of Online Pharmacies

Buying prescription drugs from an online pharmacy can save you money, time, and a lot of hassle. In fact, you may even be able to purchase drugs without a prescription, thus saving you on embarrassment if you don’t want to show your Viagra prescription to people. This is also the only way some people have of getting prescription medications—online pharmacies are often much less expensive, and for those on a budget, that can be the difference between getting medication and going without.

However, you have to be very careful when shopping at an online pharmacy. There are some scams out there, and there are some online pharmacies that actually sell fake or illegal drugs. You don’t want to get ripped off, and you don’t want to take anything that is unsafe. To that end, here are some dos and don’ts of using an online pharmacy.

Do:

Use only a licensed pharmacy. Check the pharmacy website for things like the seal from the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) or from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. If you have any doubt about the legitimacy of the pharmacy, you can contain the National Association and ask them to verify if the pharmacy has been certified by their inspectors. If it has not, do not purchase drugs from it.

Compare prices. Just like any product you purchase online or offline, you should shop around first before you purchase anything. Some websites offer cheaper prescription drugs than other sites do. In fact, your local traditional pharmacy may even have cheaper prices on some things. Don’t discount it just because it’s not an online store.

Make certain the online pharmacy has a registered pharmacist you can consult. If the online store is really legitimate, they will provide some form of contacting a registered pharmacist so you can ask questions before purchasing and taking drugs. If they don’t offer this, you may want to use a different online pharmacy.

Read the site’s privacy policy. One way of identifying fraudulent sites is that they will not include privacy and security policies regarding your information. Make certain they will not disclose your personal information to anyone. Also check for security seals that guarantee your credit card will be encrypted.

Be suspicious of deals that seem too good to be true. If you can’t find any pharmacy contact information, don’t see any legitimate organization seals of approval, or just have a bad feeling about a site, don’t use it.

Don’t:

Don’t use medication that is not approved by the FDA. You simply don’t know how they will react or what side effects they will have.

Don’t accept an email address as the only form of contact information. If there’s no physical address or at least a working phone number, don’t use the pharmacy.

Don’t believe online pharmacies that promise miracles.

Don’t let illegal online pharmacies get away with scamming people. If you find one that isn’t legitimate, report them to the proper authorities.

Four Ways of Identifying a Fake Online Pharmacy

If you’ve been reading up on online pharmacies (and if you’re planning on using one, that’s a good thing to do), you’ve probably found many articles that warn about fraudulent online pharmacies. These pharmacies either sell “drugs” that are really nothing but sugar pills, sell drugs that actually contain some harmful substances or aren’t really that useful, or simply take your money and never send you anything. But how can you easily identify online pharmacies that are fakes? Well, a fraudulent online pharmacy that really wants to get your money will probably look so smooth that it’s impossible to identify, but those are few and far between. Most fake pharmacies throw up a website that isn’t as polished as it should be. Here are four ways of spotting a fake online pharmacy.

First, the pharmacy does not require a prescription to purchase drugs. While that may be what many people are looking for in their online pharmacy, it’s also something that many scam sites advertise. Yes, there are real online pharmacies that don’t require prescriptions, but you have to be very careful here. Drawing in customers by claiming you don’t need a prescription is a favorite ploy of scam sites because it so often works.

Second, most scam sites don’t waste time listing out drugs that aren’t popular or that aren’t good sellers. If you pull up an online pharmacy and only find that they sell weight-loss drugs, painkillers, and sex-related drugs like Viagra, be wary. These sites pick these types of drugs because they’re what most people order online. Again, it’s all about drawing in the most customers to scam.

Third, the online pharmacy doesn’t list any contact information or an address. If they do list a phone number or address and you’re at all suspicious, check up on them. Often, scam sites claim to be located in Canada when they’re actually not. If the phone number is not a working number or the address is registered to another business, don’t use the online pharmacy.

Fourth, don’t ever use an online pharmacy that sends you spam email. This may sound like a no-brainer, but if they’re sending you spam, it’s a scam. Think of it this way: would your local grocery store or dry cleaner send you spam mail? Of course not. Legitimate online pharmacies do not send unsolicited email, so don’t fall for any of these offers.

Spot Fake Canadian Pharmacies

According to the various spam trackers and other internet groups that track popular keywords, one of the top spam email topics is Canadian pharmacies. Nearly everyone has received at least one email offering them prescription drugs from Canada for very low prices and absolutely no prescription. However, there are some fake Canadian pharmacies out there that don’t spam. They rely on people coming to them, and people do. However, these sites are just as much a scam as the ones that flood your inbox with emails. Here are some tips on how to avoid them.

First of all, why Canada? Well, the answer is fairly simple. Most of the targets of scam sites, in fact most of the users of online pharmacies, are from the United States. Many of them actually used to drive to Canada to purchase medication because it’s often cheaper. Once the internet became widespread, these people started ordering online, but they continued to use their favorite Canadian pharmacy instead of pharmacies located elsewhere. Canadian pharmacies are also known as being trustworthy. Many people believe drugs bought from Canada are perfectly safe because Canada isn’t a third world country or a country that has ever had any suspicions cast on it. Because of these facts, scammers often pretend to be located in Canada in order to appear trustworthy.

One way of spotting a fake Canadian pharmacy is to check out the seals they display on their website. Many do actually have seals guaranteeing that they are legitimate, but often, this approval actually comes from an organization that doesn’t exist! One of the favorites is the Canadian International Drug Association, or the CIDA. This is a fake association that is based off of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association, or CIPA. The logos look very similar. In fact, many of these fraudulent pharmacies simply take a CIPA logo and change the P to a D.

Another non-existent entity that is often cited as approving an online pharmacy is the American Drug Administration, or ADA. Again, this is another fake group that is based off of the FDA, the true U.S. drug administration. The ADA logo looks very similar to the FDA logo. Again, sometimes the only difference is the changing of a single letter.

You can also spot a fake pharmacy (or any fake business, for that matter) by the fact that they use an unsecure website to take your personal information. Check the URL of the site when entering any personal information. If it doesn’t say “https” at the beginning, it’s not a secure connection.

Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites

While many countries are working to defeat illegal online pharmacies that sell fake prescription medication, it can be very difficult to truly control these businesses, especially those that are based in one country but sell to another. However, the pharmacy industry itself is working to regulate this problem. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), a U.S. pharmacy board, created the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) plan in 1999. This plan helps customers learn about online pharmacies and their credentials before they purchase anything from them.

One of the downsides to VIPPS is, of course, the fact that it is a voluntary program. This means that online pharmacies do not have to have a VIPPS certification to operate. Those that do, however, have agreed to the following guidelines. They must maintain all licenses required to operate a standard pharmacy. They must allow information regarding their operations and their pharmacy to be posted on the VIPPS web site, and they have to provide updated information on a regular basis. They have to allow a team from the NABP to inspect their place of business and their operations, and finally, they have to link to the VIPPS web site and display a specific VIPPS graphic on their site.

When shopping online, anyone who sees the VIPPS graphic on an online pharmacy site knows that the pharmacy has been sanctioned by the NABP and sells only legal drugs. This is especially helpful to seniors, who are often the target of marketing scams. Many older internet users also don’t know of the many online ploys to get their credit card numbers, so letting them know of the graphic can help them be sure they only shop at legitimate online pharmacies.

In addition to VIPPS, there are two other campaigns working to make certain online pharmacies are legit in the United States. One is a voluntary list of guidelines the American Medical Association has published that are aimed at internet prescriptions. These guidelines list certain standards that doctors should follow when writing prescriptions online. They include examining the patient to be certain what medical condition they have; discussing the prescription with the patient, including side effects; and finally, performing a follow up exam to be certain that the patient is not reacting to the medication in some unforeseen negative way.

The third prong in the attack on illegal online pharmacies is being handled by the Food and Drug Administration. They’re working to education customers about both the benefits and the risks of using online pharmacies. They have launched a campaign using the internet, print brochures, and even radio stations to pass on important information about buying prescription drugs online.

All three of these programs will help cut down on online pharmacies in the United States that sell fake prescription drugs, but they won’t completely stop the practice. It’s all but impossible to police the internet, and because of that, consumers have to be aware of what they’re buying and who they’re buying it from.

Online Pharmacy Regulations

Many people are starting to turn to the internet for their prescription drugs, especially to online pharmacies that do not require you to have a written prescription from your doctor. However, there is always the concern that online pharmacies are not legitimate businesses. This is why many people still visit actual drug stores. In fact, records show that over three billion prescriptions are filled annually at actual pharmacies, while the sales of prescription medication online were still somewhat small.

There are many advantages to purchasing prescription drugs online, including the privacy of purchasing drugs without others knowing what you are purchasing, a greater availability of some drugs (especially for those who do not live near a major city), and the easy of shopping without ever leaving your home. You may also be able to find more information about products online than in a traditional pharmacy.

According to one survey, customers can actually save almost 30 percent by buying drugs online. This can translate to a considerable savings if the drugs are expensive. However, many online pharmacies do not have any sort of regulations or other laws surrounding the sales of their drugs. This means they can provide any prescription drug to anyone without a written prescription. They can also provide drugs that may not exactly do what they claim to.

In the United States, the FDA has found dozens of different online pharmacies may not be completely legal. Many of these pharmacies sell drugs like Viagra, weight loss drugs, and baldness drugs like Propecia. Online pharmacies based in other countries may also sell prescription drugs that may be much different from the approved version. This means these drugs may not actually cure anything.

When it comes to overseeing sales online, there are many different issues. State or government regulation boards may not be able to affect online pharmacies, especially those in other countries. The postal service and customs service of a country can help cut down on the shipping of illegal drugs. In the United States, the FDA does not allow pharmacies to sell prescription drugs to people who do not have a prescription. However, online pharmacies that operate in other countries can often bypass the FDA and sell prescription drugs anyway. It can be nearly impossible to regulate how these online pharmacies operate and what drugs they sell. Even if they manage to shut down an online pharmacy, there’s nothing to stop that company from changing their name and starting a new website.

The regulation of online health products is something many countries are working towards. Many are working to shut down illegal online pharmacies, while others are trying to legalize these pharmacies by getting them to agree to certain regulations and requirements. Again, however, it can be difficult to find and shut down these companies, and those who do not want to agree to regulations will find some way around them. To that end, it’s very important for customers to realize that not all online pharmacies are legitimate.

Buying Generic Drugs Online

When it comes to purchasing prescription drugs, many people turn to online pharmacies. While it is possible to get prescription drugs online without a prescription, these drugs may still be somewhat expensive. However, you can always purchase generic prescription drugs online at a greatly reduced price. Many, in fact, only offer generic versions of medication because they are international pharmacies. When it comes to these generic drugs, however, there is very little difference between the brand name drug and the generic version.

So what are generic prescription medications? Well, they have the exact same properties as the name brands, but they aren’t the name brand formula. Instead, they are an imitation of this medication. In a way, generics are counterfeit versions of brand name medication, but it is perfectly legal to make them. By using different ingredients or different manufacturing processes, companies can create drugs that do the exact same thing but cost much less. These savings are then passed on to the customers.

Creating a prescription medication is a long process—formulas are invented, tested, and eventually approved for use and patented. There are many expenses involved in this process. Many formulas are investigated and found unusable. Others are usable but fail in the testing phase. Still others pass several rounds of testing before unwanted side effects are found. All of this costs a lot of money, especially if a company is testing dozens or even hundreds of different formulas at once.

Generic drug manufacturers, however, don’t have these expenses. They only reproduce medications that have passed all levels of testing and are no longer patented. This saves them thousands of dollars and allows them to market their generic products at a lower price. They also do not need to advertise their products as much because the larger brand name companies are already doing that. These generic companies do not assert any patents over the drugs they manufacture, so they are not in direct violation of any laws.

These generic, cheap drugs are of good quality and are always certified as safe before they are sold. Since the original brand names have already been tested, everyone knows what side effects may be, so customers don’t question the quality of these generic drugs. They recognize that generics are safe and of the same quality as brand name drugs. They also see how much they can save by buying generics.

Online pharmacies also see the benefits of generic drugs, which is why many offer generics instead of or in addition to brand names. Pharmacies realize that they can also save money with generics since there’s less cost to them and less cost to the customer. In some countries, generics may be the only option as brand names either aren’t sold there or have not been approved for sale in that country. By offering generic prescription drugs, online pharmacies can help those who can’t afford to pay full price for brand name drugs and don’t have health care. Generic drugs, then, are more than just a way of saving money—in some cases, they are an absolute necessity.

A Guide to Buying From Online Pharmacies

The online pharmaceutical market has truly boomed in the recent decade or two, especially now that almost everyone has the internet in their home. But as with anything online, you never know when you’re getting a good deal and when you’re being scammed. However, when it comes to buying from online pharmacies, you may find that the risk of buying online is well worth the discounts.

When it comes to buying from an online discount pharmacy, customers can expect to see low prices and find substantial savings. Some also expect to be able to purchase drugs without a prescription. Some online pharmacies do sell drugs without prescriptions, but many will not sell drugs that have potentially harmful side effects without a doctor’s order. However, many users love shopping online because of the anonymous nature of the internet. Those who are looking to buy things like Viagra, for example, may want to do it online so they do not have to deal with the potentially embarrassing act of buying it in a store.

Many also shop online pharmacies that are located in other countries. These international pharmacies can get away with selling many prescription medications without a doctor’s order, and it is all legal. They often offer these drugs at a much cheaper rate since there are fewer taxes and other costs associated with them, such as distribution and warehousing costs.

Online pharmacies are especially useful for those who simply can’t afford prescription medication. Even with generic brands, some prescription medication is just too expensive for people to afford, especially those who find themselves needing four or five different drugs. With the growing costs and the economic downturn, many more people are finding their budgets very tight, and being able to save money is more important than ever. For these people, buying cheap drugs online is more than just a good idea—it may literally enable them to keep their home or to pay their utilities bills.

How does an online pharmacy get away with all of these discounts? There are several ways that they are more cost effective. They have lower overhead because there are no stores to run, clean, and staff. Their online ordering systems are so efficient that it doesn’t require a large number of employees to handle. There is also no distribution cost—everything is stored in the same large warehouses instead of being shipping all across the world to be stocked in stores.

Most of these online pharmacies also use generic drugs. While they aren’t brand names, they provide the exact same benefits for much less. Don’t worry about the fact that they come from international pharmacies—legitimate online pharmacies sell reliable drugs. To make certain a pharmacy is reliable, look for things like a physical address, a contact email or phone number, and upfront, useful information. Scam sites rarely provide contact information, and instead of providing useful facts, their sites are usually full of “testimonials” gushing about the company. If you see any of these, you may want to look for a different online pharmacy.

Buying Prescription Drugs without a Prescription

While many countries require a prescription to purchase medication, there are some that don’t. In these countries, you can purchase any drug you want without a doctor’s order. Few people know about this, however, and even fewer know how to go about buying prescription drugs from a reliable company.

There are some drugs that are not regulated, so you don’t need a prescription to purchase them in any country. They include things like alternative medicine, herbs, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and other non-medication drugs. You can purchase many of these from health food stores or places that sell alternative medication. However, because they are not regulated, there is no guarantee that they will do what they say they do. Many so-called herbal medications and nutritional supplements claim they can cure you of any disease or perform miracles such as helping you drop weight quickly. In reality, many of these products don’t do much at all, but because they aren’t regulated, they can say whatever they want in an attempt to make more money.

If you need something more powerful or something more reliable, however, you may need a prescription drug. But these drugs, even the generic versions, are often very expensive. How does one get a prescription drug without a doctor prescribing it? And is such a thing even legal? Well, with the internet, yes. It’s also sometimes necessary—many people can’t afford prescription drugs, and others may not be able to see a doctor to get a prescription.

One can easily purchase drugs from any country using the internet, which means they can buy drugs from countries without prescription laws. Often, even when you include international shipping costs, it’s much cheaper to purchase prescription drugs online than to buy them from a store. This is because there are fewer costs to be added in (distribution, sells, etc.) and because these drugs can be produced cheaper in other countries. Most often, the drugs are just as effective as the brand name products you’d buy at the local pharmacy.

Of course, you do have to be careful when you buy drugs from these online pharmacies. Some of them are scams that just want to take your money. Some also sell drugs that aren’t completely legitimate. While they may not be harmful, you may not get any benefit from these drugs. You may also experience unexpected side effects from using prescription drugs without a doctor’s approval. This is because doctors often look at your family history and at any other medications you’re currently on to make certain that the drugs they prescribe will not interact with any others you’re taking.

Generally, purchasing drugs from an online pharmacy without a prescription is very safe once you’ve done a bit of research. Check to make certain the drugs you’re buying won’t have side effects, and do a bit of research into the company to make certain they’re not a scam. That’s really all it takes to start saving on your medication.

Are Online Pharmacies Cheaper?

There are a number of people who swear by online pharmacies. They say they can get just about anything they need, even prescription drugs, at an online pharmacy and pay much less, even when shipping is added in. However, there are just as many people who are leery of using an online pharmacy. They wonder how these prescription drugs can be available at such a low cost. Are they right to worry, or are they simply missing out on a great deal?

One of the main reasons people use online pharmacies is the price. Purchasing medication, especially prescription drugs, can be incredibly expensive in the United States. Because of the way the U.S. health care system is set up, customers often find themselves paying much more for medication than those in other countries. Some other customers, both in the U.S. and other locations, prefer online pharmacies because they are private. They do not have to ever tell someone in person that they need medication for issues that many see as embarrassing.

Before the online pharmacy, many U.S. citizens would drive to Canada or even Mexico to purchase prescription medication at a lower price. However, now that online pharmacies can ship their drugs anywhere in the world, they no longer need to go to all of this trouble. In fact, they may not even need to have a valid prescription. Walking into a Canadian pharmacy still required a prescription written by a licensed doctor. Online pharmacies, though, may not. This, of course, does raise some legality issues, so it’s important that you always make certain your online pharmacy is a legitimate pharmacy.

But are online pharmacies always cheaper? Yes, generally, it is possible to save some money by purchasing your prescription drugs online. In fact, you can often purchase your medication from a major pharmacy’s online website and still save a bit of money. This is because your medication is often shipped straight from the manufacturer to you, cutting out many of the transportation and storage costs that raise the price. However, it’s often not cheaper to sign up for a prescription service. These services regularly mark up the price of the prescriptions they sell, making it just as expensive to sign up for these services as it is to walk into a pharmacy and purchase your prescription. In fact, these services are often more expensive when it comes to refills.

So overall, if you’re buying single prescription medications, then yes, buying online can be cheaper. You avoid the mark-ups caused by transportation and storage. Try not to fall for online pharmacies that are not legitimate or for prescription services. The first can be dangerous as you don’t know that the drugs you receive are one hundred percent safe. The second can cost you more money than you’d spend at a regular pharmacy. All in all, do a little research on your online pharmacy before you purchase anything from them. Once you do find an online pharmacy you like, however, you can save a lot of money.

Being Safe While Using an Online Pharmacy

Using an online pharmacy has some risk, although there are a number of benefits. The biggest is obviously the cost, since online pharmacies can be much cheaper than buying prescription drugs through a drug store. Online pharmacies are also much more private since you don’t have to hand your written prescription to a clerk and watch him or her react to whatever drug you need.

On the other hand, if you purchase medication through an online pharmacy, you take on a few risks. The pharmacy may not be completely legitimate—there are some scams out there, especially when it comes to getting some medications. Some online pharmacies also jack the price up to the point that you’re paying almost exactly the same as you would from a drug store. Some of these online pharmacies also don’t require you to actually submit a prescription for medication. This almost always indicates a very shady operation, and you should be very careful when dealing with one of these online pharmacies.

There are some ways to protect yourself from these illegitimate online pharmacies. If you’re going to use an online pharmacy, be sure you keep in mind some of the following information.

First, before you take any prescription medication, be certain you consult your doctor or another health care professional. Taking prescription medication, especially one you have not taken before, can be very risky. It is important that you know how the medication will affect your body and how it will interact with any other medication you take. The last thing you want is to buy a cheap prescription drug only to find that it causes you to become ill or worse.

Along the same lines, you want to make certain that you only buy prescription mediation from a licensed pharmacy company that sales legitimate medication. One way of verifying that the company is legit is to check their website for a street address and phone number. You can often verify this information by either calling the number or doing a search for the address in an online phone book. If you call, verify any names you find on the website and ask for basic information about the pharmacy. It may sound like a lot of work, but it will give you peace of mind.

Once you’ve verified that the online pharmacy is professional and provides legal medication, you may want to order drugs through them. If you do, be sure to examine the drugs you get in the mail. First, make certain that there is an expiration date on the bottle. If there’s not or if the date is within three months, you may want to stop using the pharmacy. Likewise, examine the pills themselves. If you have taken that kind of medication before, make certain the pills match what you’ve had. If they look different, do not take them.

Following these basic safety guidelines will help you make certain your online pharmacy is legitimate and that the medication you receive is exactly what you want.

Online Pharmacies and Government Concerns

Many governments, especially the United States government, have some major concerns when it comes to online pharmacies. Many of these concerns are very legitimate, and many are concerns that you, as a user of an online pharmacy, should also have.

The biggest concern of using online pharmacies is, of course, health. Some people who use online pharmacies do not take the time to get diagnosed by a doctor or other health care professional—they simply decide on their own what is causing their symptoms. They often use the wrong drug to treat their symptoms, which can lead to some serious consequences. It’s also impossible to tell how a new drug will affect you or will interact with other medications, adding another level of risk to ordering from online pharmacies without first consulting a professional. Likewise, many online pharmacies do not properly warn users of side effects or give precise guidelines for taking the medication.

Many online pharmacies do not sell dangerous prescription drugs, which mean even if they do interact with other medications, they are usually not that dangerous. However, the government does warn that any prescription medication can lead to health risks, so online pharmacies should be used with caution.

Another concern many governments and health professionals have with online pharmacies is that international online pharmacies may use a different formula for some medications, replacing specific ingredients with generics or other materials. This means that even if your doctor has prescribed a certain medication, the medication you get from these overseas pharmacies may not be the same. It will most likely not be harmful, but it may not provide the same level of benefits.

Health agencies are also very concerned about counterfeit medication. Some online pharmacies have actually sold either medication that they created themselves or medication that was expired. If the pharmacy is based in the United States or Canada, the risk of this is fairly low since fake pharmacies set up in these countries are usually quickly shut down. However, if you purchase medication from pharmacies in Mexico or abroad, there’s a chance the pharmacy may be out to scam you. There is a thriving black market for medication that is near or past its expiration date, and many online pharmacies try to sell these expired medications because they can make a huge profit on them. Some also sell counterfeit medications that are often nothing more than sugar pills. However, customers may pay hundreds for these.

Despite these warnings, there are many legitimate online pharmacies out there, and health agencies do recognize many of them as real pharmacies. However, you do have to examine the online pharmacy before you buy from it just to make certain you’re not about to get scammed or end up with medication that either doesn’t work or is expired. Check with a health care professional if it appears that you have purchased medication that is counterfeit or is not exactly what the online pharmacy promised. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
